    1960 Rebound strap installation

I have to install rebound straps - The body is off the chassis. I tried to jack up the leaf spring but still not enough room to attach the strap. Also what is the best tool to use to attach the rivets.
    Thanks

With the body off I used ratcheting tie down straps or heavy ratcheting cargo straps wrapped around the axle and over the rear shock upper mount crossmember to pull the axle up far enough to give me working room. As for the riveting tool, you'll need a semi-tubular rivet flaring tool (I think they're 3/16 dia rivets) of some sort to flare them. I think Corv Cent and others offer a tool or there's the Aero Rivet tool advertised in the Driveline or you can improvise with a flaring punch from an industrial supply house and your own driving method. Probably won't work by hammer and punch as there's no good way to back it up. The flaring tool needs to be driven by a screw-like device. I used a modified tie rod puller which worked out well.

      Hi Rick,

Thanks for the reply - sounds good. I have to get some racket straps and I'll check my local NCRS chapter and see if I can borrow a tool if not I guesss I'll have to buy one. Appreciate the help.

Here's a old thread showing the way I did it. I was changing the leaf springs so I installed the rebound straps after releasing the U-Bolts. Made it very easy. Shows the tool I borrowed also.

          Hi Rick,

Thanks I probably should have looked at old threads first. Good visuals and I like the idea of releasing the Ubolts.

Rich, are the U-bolts long enough with the axle hanging in the straps to get the nuts started when reattaching the springs or do you have to compress the springs some? It's been a while and I don't remember whether that was even a factor.

Rod, I recall I may have jacked up the spring a bit to get the ubolt nuts attached.
