I agree with Michael. That is an excellent pad with several unique characters appropriate for the 1966 time frame.

Should there be broach marks on the pad? The condition of this pad is excellent, similar to my 63 and at a judging event, i received a full deduction because I didn't show any broach swirls? Just trying to learn a little bit more....

Broach marks are linear, not swirls.

Not all pads show broach marks. If the blade was new, then the pad is smoother. In addition, years of aging will make them less distinct.
The theory behind the stamp pad surface deduction is to penalize the homemade "belt sander broach marks" that look very atypical, and not to deduct for the pads where they're not apparent. Unfortunately many don't realize this yet.

            Gerry,

If we had a better close up picture or a broach buster magnifier we might see some indications of broach marks. Some broach marks are more visible as the cutting tool wore down. Also factory broach marks are in a line and are not swirls.

Broach marks are there, just very faint. As far as I am concerned anything the Master passes on is good enough to take to the bank. Small blocks, for the most part, do not have as defined broach marks as do the big blocks.

Sometimes broach marks are there and the pad is just not cleaned well enough. Here is the pad on my 67 before and after cleaning with Mother's Aluminum Wheel polish. The before picture is after I had cleaned the pad with lots of liquids and elbow grease. The 2nd and 3rd are after pictures with Mothers using a tooth brush and rag.

I am up to here with this broch mark thing. Have been machining C. I. & around machine shops for over 40 years & can say that there can be great differences in machine marks on C. I. Whether it is milled or planed or broached sharpness of the tooling, Brinell (hardness) of the iron & speed of the cutter can make a big difference in the tool marks. To me these marks are a small part of identifying a factory virgin pad. I believe it will only tell you if its not typical with nontypical machining marks under the stamping. Anyone that says that without those straight deep lines its not a factory stamp is pissing in the wind. Just my thought.

                    Picture of VIN.jpeg.pdf

I'm trying to attach a photo of my VIN pad and I get what shows above. The file is a jpeg, can anyone help me with this issue about downloading the picture?? Well, if you open this post, there is a link that has the file name with a jpeg.pdf attachment. It will ask you to open. Please do.

If I'm correct, I see some broach marks on this vin pad.

                    Thoughts??

                    Thanks

In the reply tool bar there is a header that has numerous characters. On the RH side of it, third from the end, is a square with dots on all four corners. Click on that icon, chose your .jpeg, upload it from there

If you cannot get it to work, send the .jpeg to me at dick@whittingtonauction.com and I will post it for you

                        Dick,

If we click on the "Picture of VIN.jpeg.pdf", the picture does open. Can you give it a try?

                        Thanks,

Recently I was judging midyear mechanical at a Pittsburgh Chapter show. One engine pad appeared not to have any broach marks at all.
But using an I-phone photos were taken of the pad and sure enough the broach marks were there. Just not visible to the naked eye.

Absence of visible broach Marks is not a bad thing, presence or evidence of any other machining process is a bad deal.
