Re: 1970 Corvette LT1/ZR1
The ZR-1 and LT-1 core supports are definitely not the same. The basic structure of the supports is the same but that's where the similarity ends. Actually, the ZR-1 support assembly is most similar to the base engine with manual transmission and without A/C core support. Both applications use an aluminum radiator and the primary difference between them is the width of the sheet metal "block-off" plates on either side of the radiator opening. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1970 Corvette LT1/ZR1
Ron,to add to what Joe said. The radiator support in the '70 ZR1 I owned was one that was for use in a 1969 L88. It in fact, had "L88" written in white crayon on one of the side baffles. What never made sense to me was the fact that even though the ZR1 and L88 shared the same radiator, the support in my car and other ORIGINAL ZR1s I've inspected, was modified at the factory for some reason. The modification consisted of cutting the lower radiator mounting cushion brackets off and re-welding them farther to the passenger side. That made the upper bracket barely able to hold on to the top of the radiator. I have yet to find a reasonable explanation for this, but, I have seen it numerous times.- Top

I was unaware of this. I can't figure out a reason for it, either. But, there must have been one. I don't think they'd go to all this trouble without a good reason. Of course, they wouldn't have had to do it very often considering how few ZR-1 were built. I wonder if they did the same thing for ZR-2? The thing that seems really strange to me is that by moving the radiator to the right in the support they would risk the core contacting the "block-off" plate on the right side of the core support. Then they'd be facing the dissimilar metal problem.
I can confirm that in SERVICE the L-88, ZR-1, an ZR-2 core supports were the same. However, there were 2 different part numbers over the 1968-72 period. As I the recall, the first was used for 1968-E69 and the second for L69-72. I can't confirm that right now as I'm away from home. My recollection is that the difference was a bolted on bracket on the top of the support but there may have been other differences, too.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1970 Corvette LT1/ZR1
Sal It appears the radiator was moved so the bottom radiator hose (I believe 3917669 would clear). The top hose would have been a real oddball. I don't think GM would have made a hose for 52 cars over a 3 year period when a mid year big block hose would fit with minor t*******?? the 3946854 is too short, as is the 3946012, the 3946011 top hose is not close either. Comments? thanks Ronnie- Top
