    Dimmer switch hole

I really like to ask the extremely difficult tech questions, so here is yet another .

Many times in the past I have come across post here explaining how to do this or that, and said I wish I had read this before I did mine the hard way !

I am installing my drivers side front carpet . So before I screw it up , I would like to know what tricks you guys have used to create that perfect sized round hole in the carpet for the dimmer switch grommet.

    Thanks ,
    Jim

First of all, let me say that I've never done this before. C3's don't require this and I don't think I've ever done it on a C2. However, if I were going to do it, I think I'd use an arch punch of the correct size. These punches are available in a range of sizes although I don't know if there is one that is the exact correct size for what you seek. Another problem is that while these things are not hugely expensive, it would seem to me that the cost would not justify a once-in-a-lifetime use. So, find someone that has a set you can borrow.

There is a very easy way to do this. Get a piece of copper water pipe or really any pipe of the right diameter and heat it with a propane torch. Hold it with vice grips and simply push it into the carpet. It will cut a hole and melt the edges so the carpet will not unravel around the hole. I recently used this method for all the seat belt bolt holes and the dimmer hole on a 67. Put a piece of wood behind the carpet when you press it with the hot pipe.

I have an assortment of leather punches I've used in the past, but by golly, pat's hot pipe has to be superior.mike
