Removed the 8 screws from the headlight bezels of my orig paint 66 #22300 convertible a couple days ago. All the screws were the same...no machine screws in the bottom. All the screws were like the pointed side screws and rusty. All look like screws the factory installed. Given this car was never restored, in storage since 1976 and unused until I got it, I am assuming these screws were installed at the factory. Anyone else ever seen this incorrect use of screws in the headlight bezels? I always thought it was a stupid design to have two different screws used on those bezels anyway! I did not find anything in prior posts on this topic.

Re: 66 Headlight Bezel Screws
gary,
i have an original paint no hit 66 coupe parked since 1972 and unused until now (Dec 65 assy date) and have recently done some headlight service work. I noticed the exact same thing! my screws were the same finish and about same condition as your picture.

Re: 66 Headlight Bezel Screws
The AIM clearly shows two different part numbers.
Have you ever changed a headlight? So they are still original!
Now if in the factory (production floor) these screws (side ones) were garbed by the hand full, then it is reasonable to assume they
were used in all four positions. They are shorter so quicker to install. Research has shown that many screws got substituted for a faster
job, you may have found another.
Remember cars are judged (for the most part) by the AIM. Section 12 on head housing is worth 8 & 7: is concerned with eight screws, their finish
and 4 stainless steel bezels. You may see a 1-2 point result, just a guess. Easy to correct for judging and easy to return back.- Top

Re: 66 Headlight Bezel Screws
I agree that the lower screws are supposed to be fine thread machine screws, which is what I have on my 64. I have seen a few cars where the fine threaded holes were stripped when someone tried to force the wrong screw in and the type used on the sides (sheet metal) were substituted as a fix. Possibly that is what happened in your case somewhere in the way back time, or maybe even at the factory?- Top

See the thread titled "64 Head Light Bezels" a recent discussion

Let me know what you may find, I've run out of my sources.- Top
