Question on the Key knockout slugs?

How does one punch out the key knockout slugs w/o damaging/scratching the key itself with normal tools? Can either side of the key
get punched out or only one side? Car in question is a 1966 Corvette.

I understand that the dealers where instructed by the Zone Office that at the "pre-delivery" inspection they were to punch out the key blanks / slugs, (which the Parts Manager had a hand held tool to do this with) put all 4 in a small manilla envelope and give this to the salesman of the customer and he would talk about these at the time of 'New Car Delivery?

    Thanks for the help-Larry

Larry, not a quote but -
Cars are judged at the time and point of final assembly by GM,
and have undergone the current standard GM new car prep for delivery to a purchaser
from Section 2 #2 of "Corvette Judging Reference Manual"

I always used the final assembly however you may have found a conflict here?

I would not punch out the key blanks / slugs - since once done they are gone. Mine have blanks still and never a judging problem.

            Larry,
I have knocked them out with just a pin punch and what ever I had laying around for a back up. I don't remember they were physically hard to knock out but that was a long time ago.
I would try it on a blank first to see how you make out.
            Kind regards

Back in the day, early 80s when I was doing new car prep as a summer job at Day Bros. GMC in Auburn, MA, I used a screw driver / hammer to knock them out with a little tap.

My 1965 hs them still in place. Why would you knock them out? It is TOTAL proof they are the original keys.

Darryl: The key in question is the Round Key(Glove Box)which the blank came from Paragon. The ignition key is original with the slug
out which I do not have. Tried gingerly to punch out w/o success;maybe the blanks from paragon are somewhat different from the originals. May just leave alone. Larry
