At what point on the assembly line was the vin stamped on the block and transmission? Any idea what other responsibilities (if any) that worker had on the line? (In addition to changing the stamp for each car)

Mike I have the same question.
It seems I recall there was some discussion here over ten years ago, but can
t find it as VIN is not searchable - 3 digits.
Having said that I have some evidence that 1964 had the VIN derivative stamped on the Muncie, but sure would like to see more corroborating data.- Top

Re: Block and Transmission vin stamping station location on line?
A most interesting topic. Years ago while Wil Cooksey was still BG Plant GM, I sat down with him and an engineer who was a supervisor at the St Louis plant Robert Heidbrink. I came across a copy of the Licastro Birthplace of Legends floor plan that Robert marked up and what happened where. Unfortunately, it did not include where the tranny/engine vin was stamped but does show where the frame stamping occurred along with the shim replicator, or where the shims were counted and marked up. I've included a marked up copy in this image. Perhaps, some of these old timers can help identify where engine/tranny stamps occurred. This took some file transfer/upload machinations but should work.
I suspect while the worker was stamping the frame and had that stamp die set out, working numbers and individual stamps, he had access to the engine and tranny, and stamping those as well. Can't imagine that he would perform that function up the line somewhere.

Re: Block and Transmission vin stamping station location on line?
I would suggest digging out John H's presentations from the NCRS National in 2011, they pretty much were a station by station presentation of what happened when. You'd only need to look at the final assembly section, I seem to recall that specific stuff being mentioned, or questioned from the audience...- Top
