    Re: 1963 front coil springs

Sorry for the repeat but couldn't get the photo to load when trying to edit - embarrasing. I can't recall where, but I thought I read that '63 coil springs with "masking" tape over the top coil were installed in A/C cars . The picture shows what is left of them. Please shout out if you have any additional info. Not sure I want to put these in the car (not the ones the car came with). I currently have Z06 springs installed.

These could be GM #3833319 springs which were used for 1963 Corvettes with C-60. These were supposed to have "part number taped on spring". In any event, these springs look to be in very good condition. If there's no significant corrosion damage (i.e. pitting), they should be fine for re-use.

Thanks Joe - yes, they are in great condition - just need a good cleaning.

Jerry. I have used Moog front springs on both 63 and 64 with very good results. also Eaton spring which I believe is really Moog.
          Ed,

Do you know the "free" height of the 63 coil springs on a 340 HP car? Along with the number of coils and correct spring rate?
          Thanks
          Jerry

Jerry, contact Eaton spring. The only thing these days the spring has only 6 windings, 63,original springs were 7. When Long Island Corvette was around they made a 7 winding spring. Once the 6 winds are in place they are tucked into spring purch they look great. They do have a black coating on them which I was ok with. Generally speaking most judges will not deduct and make a notation for finish .original 63 springs had a lot of issues for holding correct height so beware of used springs.

I think when Long Island Corvette offered front springs they also offered a 63 spring with 8 turns (same gauge) because of the ride height issues associated with the 63 cars.

Thanks Ed. I'll take a look at Eaton. Do you happen to know the spring rate as I set of 6 coils came with my car and I'd like to get them tested as they look brand new.
