C2 Factory Balance weights - inside / outside??

Did the factory apply balance weights on C2 steel wheels both inside and and outside of wheels as deemed appropriate or did they just affix weights on the inside so none showed??
    Thanks
    Peter

      Peter,

For '63 thru '65 the AIMs state that wheel balance weights could be added only to the inside of the wheel. Starting with model year '66, wheel balance weights could be applied to either side of the wheel.

Very interesting Gary - the 5th edition 1966 NCRS Judging Guide states on page 82 section 21A "all wheels are balanced by adding weights to the INBOARD SIDE of the rim outer edge" - so I guess all must disregard the GM AIM and follow the JG to avoid points loss.

          Peter,

The safe thing to do is to go by the'66 JG. I suspect the language in the 5th edition of the '66 JG was adopted from '65 or earlier JGs and the '66 AIM language was either not considered or deemed not to apply based on observations of '66 Bowtie cars. But those cars are few.. I suspect the assembly line people had a preference for the inside that carried over from previous years. So, it's probably true that 99% of the weights on '66s and '67s are found on the inside, hence never seen on the few Bowtie cars that exist. But if I were judging, I would not deduct for weights on the outside for '66.

Didn't they go on the inside due to the hubcap outer edge hitting the weights?

Just from the population of original spare tires I’ve not seen anything other than weights on inside of the rim.

As I recall, if the wheel needed more than 5 Oz of weight it was not used. Also, if you will not be driving on the tires, NOS or coker, etc put a small weight anywhere on the inside. They only need to be balanced if you are doing a PV. A shimmy in the front from unbalancd tires will result in a PV failure.

I wonder is a PV would be a fail if there were more than 5 oz on any wheel since it wasn’t sent out the door as such. Being it would be like having solid state ignition in place of points or halogen seal beams and led bulbs.
