    1966 C-60 Fan Speed

I searched the archives and read a lot about how the blower motor resistor is "in" on L and M but is bypassed on H (1966 C-60 car), but can not find the posts regarding this topic as the search words are not obvious.

Basically, is it possible to replace the fan in a factory A/C C-2 (C-60) with one that runs faster? OR, can the resistor that controls fan speed be changed to permit a faster speed from the stock fan?

I cannot believe that this has not been a topic before, but nothing comes up in the archives with "fan" or "fan speed" or "A/C fan" or anything else I searched for.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but it seems as if this can be improved (run faster) to move more air through the system.

    Cheers,

    Richard

    Re: 1966 C-60 Fan Speed

    Hi Richard,
When the fan is on high the relay supplies battery voltage to the blower motor, there is no resistor in the circuit, so that is as fast as the motor will run. I have heard of people using C4 blowers which have larger fans, but I don't remember where I saw it.
I recently went through the heat and AC system on my 67 and found all the old foam seals had pretty much turned to dust, some of the blend doors were not adjusted very well and the evaporator core was partially plugged by debris.
I have not had it running yet, but I suspect it will now preform very well.
    Kind regards

      Thanks, Peter,

My system is all new, thank goodness, so many of those issues have been worked through. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to me as I did not pay for it, they changed from R-12 to 134-A. Nothing against that, but I wanted to keep it R-12 as I have had great results in the past in older cars with it.

The A/C runs fine and everything works as it should. It just seems that today's (noisy!) climate systems push air more forcefully through the system. Maybe mine is deficient, but I don't think so. Comparing different generations of cars is foolish, of course, but upgrading a simple fan may be something that can be accomplished.

      Regards,

      Richard

The fan itself is a squirrel cage (looks like a hamster wheel). The metal vanes on these can corrode and lose efficiency. Service replacements are plastic and a bit more efficient in moving air.

Are you aware that on factory A/C equipped cars there is a high speed blower relay that boost the high speed? Maybe yours is not working?

I am, and the fan does, in fact, move in all three speeds. However, as a knowledgeable friend mentioned to me, this is an issue that is commonly discussed as it does not move air at the same velocity as a newer car.

HOWEVER, I do intend to have the entire system reviewed once the other items are fixed and the car is running again, so there will be a double check of the relay to make sure it is functioning properly.

Fortunately for me, the entire system was totally replaced after I got the car as the seller said it worked and it did not, so he covered the complete cost of replacement. Honest seller, right?

            Thank you!

            Cheers,

            Richard

Thank-you. I have heard this and once the car is back running in a week or three I intend to diagnose any issues with any system, including the A/C, which, fortunately, is all new. Should a fan be the issue, I will bite the bullet and tackle that replacement task. I understand it is "interesting" in a C-60 car...oh, boy, more learning! This car never stops giving...

              Regards,

              Richard
