    Glove box door lock/key

Good morning, just completed having my 1967 judged at the Marlboro MA Regional, great meet and excellent judges ( knowledgeable, friendly and took time to explain deductions) I do have a question regarding the glove box door lock and keys. Many of the cars (mine included) lost points during the operations check for the same issue. I have read the judging manual page 32 section 7 and can not locate my answer.
My oval key (b) locked and unlocked the glove box as required. Then they asked me to insert the ignition key, it inserted but would not lock the door as it should Not. But I received a deduction because the key was able to be inserted in the lock.
Is the correct, it is not stated in the judging manual, and should I have lost points? Yes, minor deduction, that is Not my concern, correctness and going beyond the judging manual is hard to understand.
    Thanks, Gary

Be advised the ignition key in the spare tire lock should result in the situation you describe by not going into the lock.

1967 Ignition is a "A" key It works the ignition and doors The glove box and spare tire is a "B" key. These are totally different keys and with different "key ways" and should not be interchangeable. The repo parts manufacturers apparently make locks that will fit every car and therefore any key will fit in but not necessarily work the lock

          Gary,

Locks with keyways that accept more than one of the so-called letter keys (from '67 onward) are referred to as universal or unrestricted keyway locks. I have a spare tire lock that has an unrestricted keyway, but I have never seen a glove box lock with an unrestricted keyway. I have several GM original and NOS '67 glove box locks in my inventory at home. When I get home from work tonight I'll check to see how far I can insert a '67 A key into those glove box locks. As Gene notes, I would expect the key to insert perhaps 3/16" or less if the lock is restricted. That's how it works with restricted spare tire and door locks, for example. But I've never done that test with a glove box lock. What surprises me is that you say "many" of the cars lost points. I find it hard to believe many cars had unrestricted glove box locks, so something sounds fishy to me.

I was there with my 1967. Mine passed the glove box test, but failed the spare tire lock test. The ignition key inserted into the spare tire lock - lost 2 points in ops. What is the best option to fix the spare tire lock problem?

              John,

The easiest solution is to find a B-restricted lock core and swap it for the one in your spare tire lock. Or find an entire, good used or NOS B-restricted spare tire lock. Obviously those would need to be re-coded to your B key.

My 67 ignition key will not go into the glovebox lock and vice versa

                  Gary,

Well, I learned something today. I found 3 glove box locks for '68, which should only accept a D key. Two of the three operated that way. But one will accept a C key as well as the D. Which means it has an unrestricted keyway. I'm sure the same if true for some ''67 glove box locks, although the only one I could find easily would only accept a B key. Live and learn!
