1969 carpet underlay/jute padding question

Hi all,

I recently removed the reproduction carpet from my '69 convertible, and underneath it, I found what I suspect to be some original carpet underlay still glued to the floor in the front of the car:







It's got some over-spray on it from when a previous owner repainted the car, but it is yellow/brown padding with a black rubber-ish layer on top. Two questions:

1. Is this original?

2. Is this all the jute padding that was under the front carpet originally, or does more go on top of this? I ask because the reproduction carpet I removed had a thicker layer of gray jute padding attached to it across the entire bottom.

1. Yes.

2. Yes, that's what there was, though I have also seen another layer of "very thick roofing paper" underneath what you see there. I have not seen a pattern for it. As you can see, the reproduction stuff is entirely different.

I kept this underlayment from a 1970 that I worked on just so I can use it as a pattern for future carpet replacements.
