Corvette: The Rodney Dangerfield of collector cars?

Would you rather own a Corvette, Chevelle, or Toyota?

According to Hagerty, for the same money you can slide behind a 1970 FJ40 or a big block Corvette. But it’s a $9,000 upgrade if you want a Chevelle. And Corvette LS6 is valued little more than its 1970 Chevelle counterpart even though Chevelle production was 24 times greater.

    Values for #2 condition:

    1970 Toyota FJ40 $52,300
1970 Corvette LS5 coupe $52,400 (4,473 coupe and conv produced)
1970 Chevelle LS5 coupe $61,600 (4,298 coupe and conv produced)
1970 Chevelle LS6 coupe $130,000 (4,475 coupe and conv produced)
1971 Corvette LS6 coupe $141,400 (188 coupe and conv produced)

Is Corvette getting the respect it deserves?

    Mark,

It's very interesting how these value are determined. I guess there's more people buying LS6 Chevelles than LS6 Corvettes to keep the values at these ranges.

Owning a car for what it's worth to someone else makes no sense to me at all. I own my Corvettes for ME, not for the next owner. And I realize it's just my opinion, but if you do it any other way, you're doin' it wrong.

The '70 LS6 Chevelle is awesome car, and if you have more than one friend you want to drive around with, I can see the advantage to owning one.

Yes, it is one heck of a car. I had this one back in the 70's. M-22 with 4:10 posi. Sold it for $2500 with less than 20K miles on it.

There is no rhyme or reason as to what someone might pay for an old classic car today. It is more often driven by nostalgia rather than common sense. I have always asked the question of people that if they lusted over their high school friends 1957 Bel Air and today found one for sale for the same money as a 1957 Corvette which would they buy? The simple fact of the matter is that back in the day if the same question was asked MOST would have picked the Corvette. I would of course choose the Corvette then or today but many don't.

If you want to make money be in the stock market.

If you want to play get a muscle car or a classic.

But understand you can enjoy a car no matter what value someone says it can be cashed in for. That is for the surviving family to worry about after I’m dead.

My point is who cares what other cars are valued at. Interest here is CORVETTE.

Something to think about, what if the guy making up these numbers is a guy who owns and is trying to sell the cars that look really inflated? The writer has a large group in the market reading his reports. The market gets influenced. His car's value goes up. He makes money. It has been known to happen on the stock market for years.
PS. I have yet to see a price guide buy a real car!

I'll be a me too on that one. Mine was an El Camino SS454 LS6, M22 and 3.31 posi in Autumn Gold with bench seat, no p/s or p/b or Cowl Induction and was a stripe delete. I think I got $2750.00 for it in 1973 during the gas crunch.

1970 LS6 Chevelles are hot right now and there have been a lot of them through the auctions this year. Since no other Chevy had the 450 horsepower LS6 in 1970 it was the big dog. LS5 cars don't compare in value or popularity. It was also the highest factory rated horsepower car of the muscle car era which a lot of people seem to want at this time. The '71 Corvette LS6 was rated at 425 but it's value is due to low production and the addition of aluminum heads and it was the last really hot Corvette for many years. Add the rare ZR2 package and the value is sky high. For whatever reason certain collector cars come on strong for a few years and then level off or drop. A lot of collectors have bought high and sold low.

I don't know that I would go that far but I don't think their pricing guide is very accurate.
