    Re: C1 Brake Drum Finish

Judging Manual I think is trying to say the rear drums have a groove but its not saying there were springs in the rear. Don't know what year you have but I've never seen a C1 car with 4 springs and as I wrote earlier the 56-57 AIM and 55 passenger car AIM all call for springs on the front only.

They used the same brake drums front and rear so they all had a groove for a spring and this causes confusion.

Now maybe some expert on your particular car can say I'm wrong. If there was a Corvette with 4 springs that would be an anomaly among C1's.

My car is a 56, and after reading the posts i realized that it does not really say the rear should have the springs but had I not read these posts I would have taken it they were on all four. Thanks for clarification. just saved me buying two more.

Troy 6th edition judging manual clearly says on page 203 Rear Brake Drums use a large anti-chatter spring.
Also informs the judges that they can be seen from underneath the car without removing the wheels.
I have also had the benefit of owning a 5 star bowtie car as well as another Original unrestored 57 that also had springs on all four wheels.
I have attached a few pictures from the bowtie car

My very original 63 (June built) Corvette has a round spring on the drivers side front drum and a flat spring on the passenger side. There are NO springs on the rear drums. I have had 20 plus 55-57 chevys since high school in the early 60's and never seen a flat spring until I discovered the one on my 63 and none of them had rear springs. I don't care what the judging manual says, I wouldn't put rear springs on. Wouldn't be the first time the manuals miss led us.

Hopefully, Dave Smith will post photos of front and rear drums from his beautiful 1957 5 Star Bowtie

Many, many 62's had flat springs. And every original unmolested 62 I have seen had springs on all 4 drums.

My car had two springs when i got it and assumed at first 4 were needed. I had already removed springs from drums for cleaning and after looking at my pictures beforehand i have noticed at least one of the springs was on a rear drum. Other one not sure.
Looking in Noland Adams Vol1 edition on page 126 there is a picture of a 57 as there are installing motor, you can clearly see springs on front but is hard to see springs on rear drums. It does look like maybe there are. Yet Noland says springs were installed only on front drums!!
Davids pictures confirm some at least had them on all four, and mine now appears to have had at least one on the rear.

Hmmm. If your car only had 2 springs and one of them was on the rear then that means one of your front drums doesn't have a spring. I would think that your car would chatter severely when the brakes are applied. I have experience with that happening to me.
