1967 Corvette 427 Engine Stamp Issue

The President of our chapter suggested I get in touch with Paul Amansky or Terry McMannon about this issue. I could not figure out how to reach them so I am posting here.

I have a correct 427 block at Engines Limited (Randy Chapin)getting broached and stamped. During the stamping process he accidentally skipped the numbers stamp and hit it again with a hammer and it put two numbers stamps about 1/10th of an inch apart. He is suggesting to re-broach the pad then stamp again. He cannot deck the block because there is not enough metal there and the result would be some sort of shim between the block and head. This means he would have to cut the pad down then re-broach just it.

My concern is that this is not exactly proper for NCRS and I want one that is proper and correct.

I appreciate an expert opinion. You are also welcome to call me at 214.999.1200. This is my cell.

    Thanks

Welcome to the club and the Technical Discussion Board Mr. Holland.
You can find Terry McManmon listed in Member List you can find by clicking on Members in the smallest tool bar above.
Names are sorted by first name, then by last. Paul Oslansky is not a registered user of the website so his name is not listed there.
It is possible that Terry Mc will have contact info for Paul and will share it with you.
I'm not sure what you want to ask either of these gentlemen. Neither one can do much about the mis-stamping on your engine case.
Sounds like it is what it is, unless you choose to have it redone, somehow.
In any case, I wish you good luck.

Murray, welcome to ncrs, You should become involved in your local chapter, the knowledge you will gain is sometimes priceless.
A re-stamped engine, although it looks good at local shows, should always loose the points associated with the pad and stampings, at NCRS judging events. Our judges are constantly trained to detect re-stamped engines.
I would leave your double bounce alone, do not like the extra shimming of the head. Regardless of what Randy does re-stamps are still detectable

This one is not rocket science. You hired a professional to do a professional job for you. The professional made a mistake (his fault) that has damaged your property to the point that it cannot be reasonably repaired.

His suggestion for repair is ridiculous.

In my opinion, he owes a block that has not been damaged in this fashion, that meets your date code needs, and that is appropriate for re-stamping without "obvious" detection.

I am not going into the discussion of whether or not re-stamps are detectable; that is not the point of this thread.

My suggestion is that you ask Randy to find your a replacement block that is at least as good of a starting point as you provided to him. The expense involved in locating and acquiring this block is his, not yours.

I had a block decked and never touched the pad, just opposite of what is being recommended. It is possible to mill the pad and not touch the deck surface of the block, but it takes a very competent machinist to do so.

Many original blocks are not perfect. Look at it first as it may be more realistic than a perfect stamp.

Absolutely correct Dick. It takes some serious skills, and good equipment, to do something like that.

This thread reminded me a a restamp that was purposely had an error that everyone agreed that a stamper would never let pass. Car got Bloomington Gold and NCRS Duntov. Won't disclose the car or owner but if you have been around this club for 30-35 years you might remember it. Very well known owner
