Sand like substance in gas

I removed my Holley carburetor in my 64, 365hp today to get it rebuilt. When emptying the gas from the carburetor I noticed there is a "sand like" substance in the gas that came out. Sounds serious to me, anyone know what this could be?

Deterioration of the carb internal plating due to age/corrosion/ethanol fuel??

Or your gas station is doing a poor job of storing and filtering your gas for the car.

I hope you are correct with the "deterioration" answer. The underside of the carburetors 4 valves were pretty black. I just purchased the car last September so I don't know when the last rebuild was done on the carb.

Check to see if the carb has a sintered fuel filter inside the fuel inlet fitting. It could be disintegrating.
