    1967 tires

I'm having a bit of a hard time decoding NCRS tire guidelines. I've read page 91 of the 2017 Judging Guide. Spent a couple of hours looking through posts in the forum. Maybe I'm just thick.

The wheels are original and now correctly repainted. (I hope). The tires that I pulled off were 20 year old Michelin P215/70R15 whitewalls. I'm trying to find a tire that wouldn't be "judged" too harshly. Doubt the car will ever the Top Flight, paint job is a tad off on color. So... can I get a couple of specific suggestions on rubber? Not looking for a bargain basement prices, but, the Top Flight tire standard is overkill.

    Gary,

What do you wanted for a side wall color? Black wall, white wall of red line? I think you can still find the white wall Uniroyal Tiger Paw radial tires in the 205/75-15 size. For your 1967, I personally would go with the Diamond Back red line Firestone brand in the 205/75-15. The red lines aren't cheap but they are a nice tire. As for black wall tires, the only tire I've found is the 205/75-15 Goodyear Viva 3 all-season radial. These are sold at Wal-Mart. I drive my car(s) to all NCRS events when they are judged and have logged hundreds of miles on them and they perform great and only take the standard deduction for an OEM brand replacement radial tire. I have the Diamond Back Firestone gold line radials on my '65 and they are great and again only take the standard deduction.

    Regards,

    James West

Thanks James. I should have said I was thinking about red lines. The Diamond Back red line Firestone look like a great suggestion.

I put the Uniroyal Tiger Paw 205-75-15 whitewalls on my 67. They look good and were the best value in my view.

Tires fall under the Standard Deduction Guidelines table, so you need this information in addition to the judging guide to make an informed decision. To minimize deductions on modern day tires, you need to do a couple of things. One, they need to be of an original equipment manufacturer. These would be Goodyear, Firestone, Uniroyal, BF Goodrich, and General Tires. Second, they need to be a modern day size equivalent of the 7.75 x 15 designation. For modern day radials, that would be 215/70R15 or 205/75/R15. If they have whitewalls, then the width of the whitewalls needs to be 5/8" in width. If you want redlines, then your oem equivalent manufacturers are reduced to Firestone, Uniroyal or Goodyear, and red stripes need to be 3/8".

So, if your tires are a modern day radial, from an oem manufacturer listed, sized 215/70R15 or 205/75/R15 and have the proper stripe width (or none), this approach would provide the least deduction (short of original tires or Top Flight standard tires).

I went with John D's suggestion. Uniroyal Tiger Paw 205-75-15 whitewalls. So I guess the deduction won't be too bad.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring tires are also available in blackwall configuration. Too, they are not horribly expensive, ~80/tire at Walmart.

I just put a set of 215/70-15 Tiger Paws on the wide wheels of my '60 and today I returned from a 200 mile round trip with the car. I noticed nothing about the tires to criticize.
