Been doing a frame off on a 1969 convertible and starting to put things together before putting the body back on. All pulleys are original and in nice shape. I purchased the GM replacement belts as specified in the Assemble Manual but the Water Pump Belt seems to be too 'lose'. Since there is no adjustment for this belt, is there anything to do OR is this just the way it is ? Since it is between the alternator Belt and the AIR Belt it should be 'contained' and not need to be too 'tight'. If this is the way it fits, them I am ready to move on. Thanks for any comments or suggestions. Thanks Steve

This is too loose. The correct belt was a GM #3935420 which is 3/8" X 32-1/2".In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1969 350/350 Fan Belt Fitment Issue
Joe,
Thanks for the response. But, I am still having an issue. With Crank Pulley 3850838 and Water Pump Pulley 3890419 and Belt 3935420 There is no Way to 'stretch' the belt to attach to the Harmonic Balancer as you had discussed in a previous post on belts. I did have a Crank Pulley 3858533 with Water Pump Pulley 3890419 and Belt 3935420 that I mounted to see what that Looked like and I believe that the belt could be'stretched' to the Harmonic Balancer. All pulleys are GM and not after market. Any insight into where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.- Top

Crank pulley GM #3850838 and water pump pulley GM #3890419 are standard groove pulleys. These pulleys are not correct for a 1969 L-46 engine.
Crank pulley GM #3858533 is a deep groove pulley. It is used in conjunction with a deep groove water pump pulley GM #3848904 for the 1969 L-46 application (except if equipped with C-60). GM specifies that belt GM #3935420, a 32-1/2" belt, is used between these two pulleys (except when equipped with N-40).
A mix of standard groove pulleys and deep groove pulleys cannot be used in any pulley set.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1969 350/350 Fan Belt Fitment Issue
Joe,
Thanks for this information. I found a used GM#3848904 pulley on eBay that cleaned up nicely (most of the people were really proud of their pulleys) and I already had a nice GM#3858533 pulley. With belt GM#3935420 it was no trouble to the 'pull' the crankshaft pulley down to the harmonic balancer. Since I have not seen this information in the assemble manual or anywhere else, don't know how I would have gotten this done. Thanks Again, Steve Morrow- Top

The GM #3858533, released in 1965, was actually available from GM until recently. It's now been discontinued but, believe it or not, there is a supercessive replacement, GM #19355269. It's not cheap, though---it GM lists for $179.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
