1961 door open pull rod length

In taking apart the door guts of my '61, I saw someone had "fixed" a broken pull rod by brazing a huge lump over two breaks in the rod. I ordered a new one and when it arrived, I measured it against the other unmolested one and discovered that the old one was 17-1/16" long and the new one is 16-7/16" long. Can anyone tell me what the correct length should be? I can't believe that a 5/8" isn't significant. I'd rather not attempt to put everything together and find that it is, indeed significant. Aside from the AIM can anyone point me to a definitive, illustrative source for where all the rods go and what their orientation is? Not much in the door cavity is intuitive to me.
