Diff Date vs Build Date ?

Newbie ? The differential in my car is stamped AK 92766. is it possible that it is original to
to a car with VIN # 194377S102848? which decodes as built between 11/66 and 1/67
i think. i'm trying to decide whether to use it as a core or rebuild. thanks.

It is very likely original..........due to the October labor strike that occurred.

Do you have a tank sticker or protect-o-plate for your car?? That should prove it one way or the other.

thanks for the reply larry. had not heard of the strike, interesting. no protect-o-plate.
i have a tank sticker but can't get there from here. i have a bad sender so a tank
drop is in the near future soon as i round up all the parts. hopefully, the sticker
will be legible.

For a coup, borrow a boroscope and remove the gas tank filler boot........should be able to see it. Can do without the scope on a convertible.

Buy an OLA logo replacement tank from Quanta and get a new GM NOS gas tank sender rubber seal and you should be good to go.

I took pictures of my tank replacement showing first the car and tank replacement being setup, then a few pics during the tank removal, and then finally a bunch of pics after the tank was dropped and before doing much else. THEN I carefully removed the tank sticker. It was in about 6 pieces at the time, but still very legible.

larry, i've been meaning to get one of those bore scopes that uses your smart phone for the monitor. don't know about
picture quality but they can be had for less than $50. maybe someone here has experience with these.
good idea about the pics.

The AK differential was a 3.36:1 non positraction differential which was the standard offered if a positraction rear was not ordered. There were 2632 out of the 22940 '67 Corvettes that came with the standard differential which would make it somewhat of a novelty. I'm guessing everyone already knows that.

yeah, just my luck. i'd ask "what are the odds?" but i guess we know. thought about
fitting an eaton truetrac torque sensing unit but they don't make them for this diff.
have one in an 8" in another car and it's been great.
i'll drive it as is for now until i figure out what i want to do. actually, in the little time
i've had it the lack of a posi hasn't been a big deal.

I think it's good. My 67 is about 500 cars ahead of yours and the date is 8-31-66..

As Larry alluded to, it should be good (what with the strike, and all). According to the C2 Registry, your car was "born" on November 2, 1966.

Consider having Gary Ramadei build a replacement post unit for you with your choice of ratio inside the old housing. He can build to various cosmetic and HP levels. Excellent reputation. The best of both worlds.

My '67s AK was swapped out with a positraction unit in the AK housing, I'm guessing early on and possibly dealer installed. It has a red fluid warning tag on the housing fill plug, and a postraction warning on the jack board. It's in what I believe to be original housing and is also specified AK on the protecto-plate. Other than the two warnings, you would not know it's a positraction rear unless you have the back of the car off up with the wheels off the ground, and try turning one.

steven, funny you should mention that. i originally thought mine might have
a posi because it also had that tag on the fill plug. no warning on the cover
board though. after getting both wheels off the ground i could see it wasn't.
guess the tag was someone's idea of a joke.
