1963 Replacing shifter 4speed lock out "T" handle

Sometime during the restoration process the shifter 4speed lock-out "T" handle was broken.
I suspect it was during the body drop.
I have purchased a new one from Paragon it's part number 5856.
Can it be replaced without removing the shifter?
It comes with a small brass nail. Unsure where that goes at the moment, or even how it comes apart.
    Any advice will be appreciated.

I think it's best to remove the shifter and knob then you will see that the rivet holds the chrome shield in place on the shifter handle. The T handle, cable, and spring are captured inside the shield. The rivet passes through the bottom of the shield and handle , grind the end off and remove the rivet. Now you can slide the shield and T handle up and off of the handle. Replace the broken T handle and cable with the new one inside the shield, slide the assembly back down the shifter handle, install and secure new rivet and your done. Re install the shifter and knob.

Rick, I replaced the t-handle on my 63 on the car but could not get the rivot toght enough, and the handle rattled, so I ended up removing the shifter to set the rivot correctly. If you have a tool to set, it would have to be small enough to fit. the old rivot can be ground off and removed. I really agree with Richard on his approach.

My car has the heat shield and I was worrying about damaging it. I have read where pulling the shifter/handle through the top is best.
I will give it a try. Sounds like the rivet may be below the fiberglass pan? I will attempt to document it and share the results.
        Thanks for the input.
