    C2 A/C battery tray bolts

1965 AIM (and other C2 AIMs) calls out 9422606 screw to mount left side battery tray. I know what it is, a 5/16-24 X 7/8 recessed hex head self starting bolt. I have searched the archives and there are a few posts identifying what it is along with head marks. Apparently it was never a service part. Don't need the thick washers, have those. All the parts houses sell the "E" mark captive washer bolt you see on the non-A/C cars for the A/C car (along with washers), those are wrong, no captive washers on the 9422606. Question is, where can I find a set of 6 that will meet NCRS judging for a high point 65 restoration I'm working? Anyone know what passes judging and where I can get them?

Dont necessarily need new, used originals would be wonderful, can refinish.

Ed what about the bolts that hold the tire tub up. there are around that size, they are a fine thread and black ,indented head, self starting, with no washer The length I am not sure,. for my 63 I think I bought mine from LIC.

Take the bolts with the captive washer clamp the side of the washer in a vise and with side cutters snap off the washer.

I think the tub bolts are a lot shorter and may not make it thru the thick washers and tray flanges and still have enough thread to tighten up, but I'll check it out anyways.

Thought about doing this, but I think the original bolts have a slight flange around the bottom of the head which these modified bolts won't have.

Here is a photo of the bolts I have. The tire tub is a self threading bolt and the battery tray bolt goes into a nut insert on my car. The battery tray bolt is longer also. Both head marks are a D with circles around it.
I think Rich at Original Corvette had some on his old eBay site that appears to be shut down. Sokoloski or Fortier would be the other vendors to try.

Thanks for the picture Stewart! If I cannot find the D head bolts I think I will go with E head bolts on hand and cut off the captive washers as Gene suggests.

Ed is the thread pitch the same on the repro E bolts? Some of the repro E bolts have a different thread count.

No, they are 18 not 24. But its OK, someone previously installed 18 thread bolts cutting the larger threads. Would have had to do some welding at the holes to use 24 thread bolts as original anyways. Wouldn't mind doing so, if I could get my hands on the original bolts.

Stewart, Are you referring to your small block car? My experience is that all frames had the inserts on the pass. side and regular holes on the drivers side. A/C and big block cars used self tapping bolts ( like you pictured above) to secure the battery tray because of the lack of inserts.
The bolts for the pass. side with inserts are a 5/16 X 18 and the ones for the drivers side without inserts are 5/16 X 24 self tapping.

You are correct as usual Jim, I got the cars mixed up. The bolts in the photo are from the 396. They do go directly into the frame for the left side battery tray.

Seems to be some dissent in the specs for the 9422606. David B calls it an 18 thread. In the archives there are a few posts calling it a 24 thread that is 7/8 long. The picture Stewart kindly provided shows a 24 thread. So, whats right? is it a 24 or an 18? I'm thinking that 24 is correct as the frame thickness is not reinforced in this area (for left hand battery tray) and the 24 might provide an extra thread in the metal over the 18. Also, the similar marked ((D)) spare tire tub bolts that also thread directly into the frame, are 24s. Too bad they are only 1/2" long otherwise I'd use them for this since they would look right and are available.

Mine are 5/16 X 24 with the "D" head mark, the same as Stewart's and I'm 100% positive they are the originals.

Thanks Jim, I appreciate your checking your original. The short 1/2" version I have. Now if only I could find a half dozen of the apparently rare longer 3/4 or 7/8 bolts I'd be all set.
