1965 Corvette 396 Starter Rebuilder Needed

I am looking for someone in the Corvette vendor world that can rebuild my original 1107352 starter for a 396 engine. I am curious as to whether heavy duty or high torque components can be installed in the original housing?

Any recommendations of a starter re-builder that people have used would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    James West

The original starter was a high torque starter so no conversion is necessary.

Starters can be rather easily rebuilt. If you have even modest mechanical skills you can do it yourself.

If you haven't let the smoke out they typically can be repaired easily.
90% of the time a solenoid repair kit will get them running again.
The rebuild kit is just a simple copper coated disk and the stud where the large cable hooks up.
The main power stud can be loosened and rotated 90 degrees and it is as good as new. It doesn't typically require replacement.
it has a square end, like a carriage bolt, that keeps it from rotating and rotating it exposes new copper for the disk to ride on.
The fork should be inspected also. It has to ends that contact the Bendix. They tend to wear.
Remember this fork serves two functions. Engages the Bendix and then stops the starter after you let go of the key.
The brushes ride on a electrical film, for lack of better words, and when you cut the power the brushes will wear quickly if the starter isn't stopped mechanically.
All the parts can be had at Napa or your nearest alternator/starter rebuild business.
Before you let go of any original part be sure to take pictures. Many rank and file re-builders have no use for number matching anything.
I understand you weren't looking for just any guy but be aware out there.
      Rick

The 352 starters are very durable, believe that I have only rebuilt mine once, but have rotated the brass stud terminal in the solenoid a couple of times. Here is a list of what was normally replaced in a dealership environment. Set of brushes (4), drive end bushing in nose cone, leather washer at commutator end, end frame with bushing at commutator end, shift lever ( fork), and sometimes maybe a new solenoid or starter drive.

I've had Ken Bruno restore an alternator for me, and he does starters also. The alternator is pure jewelry! If you are looking for a resto vs a rebuild, I recommend him. He does nice work.
