    1965 Holley 2818-1 accelerator pump

The 1965 JG 6th edition page 118 says "The accelerator pump is attached with four fillister head Phillips screws" for small blocks. My problem is virtually every one of these I've ever seen has the pump attached with clutch head screws. The next page calls out the clutch head screws for big blocks, which is a different carb. Below is a photo of four different accelerator pumps I have, three of them bear the same Holly p/n 34R-2178. For a 2818-1 with a 512 date, which is correct? #1 in the picture, a square block without countersinks is maybe the oldest design I think; #2 is the same but with countersinks for the clutch head screws (same as used on 4160 secondary metering plates); #3 uses the phillips head screws in the recessed corners; #4 is the "banjo" type mostly found in service replacement carbs. Like I said, I have seen all of them in vintage carbs, but would really like to know when each was originally used. As I said, I have seen a lot of the 2818-1 with the #2 configuration with the clutch head screws, so maybe the JG is wrong? C2 judges please weigh in on this if possible.

    Ed,
There was a lengthy discussion on the Phillips/clutch head screws talked about on this site. I’m guessing about a year ago. Seems there was offerings of both screw head types in the non countersink (csk) type. There were some photos of the various castings of that period as well as later ones. My recollection was the 67 model year had some of both sited. But I don’t recall they being specific data on 65. You need to do some of this site searching.

I did research this before I posted the question. There has been discussion but no definitive answers. The question is simple really, are clutch head screws in the beveled hole accelerator pump covers correct for 1965 hipo small blocks equipped with 2818-1 carbs? The NCRS TIMJG says not, says fillister Phillips head used. Yet all the carbs I've seen with the early pump cover style use clutch head screws. So, is the JG wrong? Or is everyone else? If I reuse the pump cover with the clutch head screws in my customers car will he lose points when he has it judged? I can put a non-beveled cover of the same type with the specified screws, but they may interfere with the intake manifold under the pump.

The JG will be followed and if it says phillips head screws that's what the judges will be looking for! Take that to the bank and that's all you have for a backup.

            Edward,

I can tell you for a fact I am familiar with a 1965 L-79 car with It's original Holley 2818 and the accelerator pump screws are the countersunk clutch head type.

              Tim,
Yes, thats pretty much what I see on these and I believe thats the original configuration. However, it appears it would get a deduct in judging based on the NCRS 1965 JG.

Might be a good idea to contact the Team Leader for the 65 and discuss that with him or her direct. Could it be that the Judging Manual could stand a revision? I didn't say that to let the wrath of the upper's fall down on me. Just a constructive suggestion.

My un-restored '65 coupe equipped with L79 has the Holley 2818-1 with the counter sunk clutch head screws. The car is a mid-July build car, VIN 2209x.
