66 Windshield washers will not stop after rebuild

I recently rebuilt my windshield washer system and was successful! When I push to button the wipers turn on and the nozzles squirt onto the windshield however they do not stop. I had read on the forum that the magnet does not release if the wires are reversed so changed the polarity and the washers reacted the same way. Is there anyone that can help me find a solution to this problem? Thanks, Alan Shughart, #61648

    Alan,

Common problem and can be fixed without removing the entire assembly. There is a park switch that the green and yellow wires attach inside the assembly. You should have removed the switch and cleaned the contacts. Also the switch is activated by a spring loaded lever on the large drive wheel (plastic) and sometime it gets gummed up as the rest of the motor does. It should be cleaned and lubed to move freely. Also when reassembly is done you should adjust the switch mounting screws so this lever activates the switch to park the assembly.
You can do all this by just removing the washer cover.

Joe, Thank you for the answer. I am not ignoring you however my car is torn down more than I anticipated at this point so I really can't test my washers until I put the electrical system back. I should be able to get that back by the end of next week. These cars have a habit of making one project lead to another if you know what I mean? Sincerely, Alan

Joe, I finally was able to get the battery, starter and electrical all back into the car and reworked the washers as you suggested today and they worked! I cleaned the switch and everything seams to be working great! Now all they have to do is work for operations! Ha.. and on the road of course! Thank you so much for your excellent advice. Alan
