    1966 Shifter Installation

I replaced flywheel and took shifter out in process. The shifter came out from behind crossmember with transmission still installed but released from bellhousing. I have re-installed transmission and am having a difficult time installing shifter. Could I get some guidance on installing shifter with transmission in place?

Walter do you have the driver side front pipe installed?

Sorry, I should have stated in first post that car has sidepipes

Walter, I done a quite a few mid year transmissions and clutches,I generally work from either front or rear of the cross member. the mount is also installed as that transmission sits a little higher.

You can install shifter with mounting bracket attached.

I have loosened front engine mounts and the transmission mounts and literally pushed the engine / transmission over to the side to get a little more room on a 1960 (you don't get much but every little bit helps). I'm not sure if you could do this on a mid-year. Don H.

After loosening the motor mounts and trans mount, I used a ratching style tie down strap to keep the assembly to the side while installing the shifter

Shifter in. I had engine attached to chain fall to hold in place while I removed transmission. I pulled engine up as far as it would go, without removing engine mounts which raised transmission in tunnel. This gave ample room to install shifter from front of crossmember.
