Re: 1957 t-10
the corvette usually has to be built post-mid may of 57. the t-10 tail housing cast date ought to be a week to a month pre-build of the car. the date stamped on the cast iron case ought to be shortly after the cast date on the tailstock. anything else needed? mike- Top

Re: 1957 t-10
Many of the T10 had cast dates just like yours and not assembled till December 57 . Making them 1958's .Jerry Bramlet has a t10 with a earlier assembled date .It is listed on the Corvette Forum. You could always buy his and sell yours .- Top

Re: 1957 t-10
The T-10 information on my original transmission is: main case cast date =4-26, assembly date = WF1972 (June 19, second shift), tail shaft casting date is 4-27-57. The trans was original to VIN 5813.- Top

Re: 1957 t-10
My VIN is 4906 built June 30. I've had it since 1973. Original trans main cast date:3-20. Assembly date WF 1372. but my tail shaft must have been changed. It reads 5-20-60. See pix. Can anyone tell me what the tail shaft goes to?- Top

Re: 1957 t-10
Frank,
Trailshaft probably Corvette. Side cover doesn't appear correct for early '57 T-10 either. Remove the cover and the number should be cast inside.
Please post a better photo of the Main Case as can't seem much past the fill plug. Thanks,
Gary

Re: 1957 t-10
Thanks for the reply. My original color was Arctic blue metalic and if the painter ever finishes it will be again. Here's a broader pic. The inside of the side cover will have to wait. What will I be looking for? Something like the stamping on the left rear? I'll check it out soon.Attached Files- Top

Re: 1957 t-10
I "believe" there was a running change in the tailshaft mounting bolts from the initial 3/8" to 7/16", which may explain a # of mismatched extension housing dates......under warranty, of course. Can anyone verify?- Top

Re: 1957 t-10
The side cover should be aluminum and no reinforcement ribs around the bosses for the shift arms . The tail housing rear motor mount bolts were always 3/8. The tail housing changed mid 59 with the addition of a 2nd rear motor mount .Attached Files- Top

Re: 1957 t-10
All three of the 57 T-10s I own or owned had tailhousings drilled and tapped for 3/8 coarse bolts. All 3 had gusset-less side covers .all had provisions for a single attachment point for floor shifter. All had tailhousings with crescent shaped machining where seal pressed into tail . All mike- Top

Re: 1957 t-10
As a point of reference the '57 T-10 4 speed was drawn up by Chev. Engineering beginning 6-24-56 and finished 7-31-56. Along the way there were a TON of engineering changes made to improve, so there are a lot of variables in the early years. Mike's description pretty well sums up what the production version looks like. The Volume 13 #1 Restorer article by Wayne O. Loren was well researched and gives a pretty good description of the Warner T-10. Proto type versions such as O-147672 reported in the Nassau Corvette has it's own story along with the early '57 versions used at '57 Sebring. A small booklet could be written about it's development and the many changes it under went. Too much stuff to post etc. etc..- Top
