Auto Custom Carpet--Mass backing (heat and sound barrier)

Anyone get the mass backing compared to std. (mass is a heat and sound barrier already adhered to the underside of the carpet from ACC). I know its not original (original had no backing; std) but thought i would do this so i don't have to do the foil.

Dave, as long as you are not concerned with flight judging go for it. One can always find an area to expose the underlayment. But you can always do the stock concourse class where those type things are no deduction.

What would the deduction be for (heat and sound barrier) for those of us that occasionally drive out cars?
As some things might be worth the minor deduction. Just so its not the difference between top flight!

        Richard,

Hushmat is thin enough that Judges won't notice it. You can read about the heat testing on this link:

I drive my 65 a LOT and see no reason to modify the carpet underlayment. What make you think your required to change it to drive the car?

Exhaust and engine noise drown out everything and sound great. Your not going to change that unless you drive real slow and change the mufflers.

You can used a white closed cell foam insulation, it was used under padded Vinyl roofs. It is about 1/8 inch thick.

If you are worried about judging you can always add a little jute in the areas that would be easily exposed. If I caught a judge pulling my carpet up to check for backing I think he and I would have a meeting of the minds with the judging chairman..

I also bought the ACC "mastic with jute" and it was a real nightmare to try to install. I discovered that the printed layout that they provided had some pieces reversed side-to-side. I pointed this out to them and they said they would correct the layout. We'll see. I ended up cutting probably 1/4 off of many of the pieces in order to (kinda) fit. I felt that most pieces didn't fit in the rear area behind the seats of my '69 convertible, and are too thick if you already have purchased their carpet with jute backing. I may only use the one small piece on each side, at the rear downslope of the wheel well as their mold was higher than the wheel well there. I haven't attempted the front carpeting yet and hope it will go much better. Just an FYI.
