Today I was replacing a broken spring in my drivers side door latch mechanism. I noticed the rod that connects the inside latch to the lock mechanism looks like it is assembled backwards? I thought the rod should be behind the latch and the end should point towards the inside of the car instead of its current location? Does this need to be reversed?

Re: 1964 Door Latch Assembly
Really hard to tell from the AIM on Doors Sheet 7. Try it both ways and see if it rubs on something. What does the door look like? What about the other end of the rod. If it has been working why mess with it. "If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it"!- Top

Re: 1964 Door Latch Assembly
The other end can go either way. I have looked all over the internet for pictures with no luck. It looks like it was apart before and they bent the rod a bit to make it work this way. As long as I have it apart for the locks and spring I am cleaning it all up and lubricating everything. I want to make it right.....too many years in enginnering school I guess. It would drive me nuts if I found out it was wrong after I put it back together. ;-)- Top

Re: 1964 Door Latch Assembly
I found the answer in the AIM. I had looked before but missed it. It seems my rods were assembled on the wrong side of the latch mechanism and were bent/twisted to make them work. Yiks!
I ordered new rods this morning along with new clips, vapor barriers, foams ect. Thanks Scott P for the tips on peening the knob spindle and moving the handle forward in the slots to take up any wear.
