Windshield butyl tape

Does anyone know what the butyle tape thickness is for a 1970 windshield?

They did not use a butyl tape in 70. GM used a damming strip around the windshield, which was about 1/4" tall. The piece I have here measures about 7/32" tall, but I am sure it was squished some during install. The damming strip had a cloth backed adhesive strip to hold it to the windshield. You can normally see that around the edge of the windshield.



It was then back-filled with a Thiokol sealer around all the edges of the windshield.




If I was to use a butyl strip, I would use either a 1/4" or 5/16" diameter. I am afraid with a 3/8" diameter, you will have a hard time getting all the stainless-steel trim to fit correctly. The 1/4" tape is most commonly available at body shop supply stores.

In the 5th Edition TIM&JG, Page 63, Figure E10.2 shows a schematic how this was done. Alan Struck drew the schematic for us and furnished bits and pieces for us to photograph. I still have those pieces.
