Dobbins Fact Book of the 1968-1972 Stingray 4th Edition has a picture of the hang tag on page 34. The tag reads "USE Axle & Transmission D-A Speedsport 90 Gear Lube D-A Lubricants Indianapolis, Indiana or it's equivalent. The tag is reported as being from a 1968 L88.

Thanks Larry! Yes, that was the reference I saw. Also, for completeness, the 1970 AIM UPC M20, sheet A4, depicts the P/N 3892548 tag being applied to the transmission fill plug with RPO M22 being specifically referenced with that P/N. Some popular Corvette parts suppliers list the tag as being applied to the differential fill plug. Because it is 90 weight gear oil, probably used in both assemblies.

Because the tag specifically mentions a lubricant supplier's brand name, methinks the racing sponsorship theory is viable ... in fact, the D-A Lubricant website's history area, mentions that in 1954, "Tom Binford takes over CEO role at D-A Lubricant Company. Elected President of US AutoClub in 1959, establishes D-A Mechanical Achievement Award honoring chief mechanic at the Indianapolis 500."

Yup, I don't think its coincidence after reading Paul Van Valkenburgh's excellent book: Chevrolet - Racing?
