What grease can i use on window channel, window cranks hard drivers side. Is there any adjustments that can be made to soften cranking? The cars only forty plus years old. (1977)

Re: Window channel grease
You may have a problem with the window spring that is behind the crank. These get rusty and tend to stick. New springs are available from the typical vendors- Top

Re: Window channel grease
Cleaning and lubricating the window regulator, track, crank often makes a big difference. White lithium grease is typically used and works well.
While you're in there clean and lube the door lock, handle, and related mechanisms too.Mark Edmondson

Re: Window channel grease
I agree with Mark my 72 window did not move easy, What I found in my case was the Aluminum housing behind door panel was dry and what grease was there was hard as a rock. once the panel(s) are off remove any access panels and lube every that moves. I also used a spray lube called fluid film on linkages on door latches. I am sure there are many types that will also work.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: Window channel grease
I used white grease and windows were even harder to rotate. What can i use to clean the channels? Is the window regulator spring a option and does the glass have to be removed ? I see there is three bolts holding it to door and mine when removing bolts did not want to come off.- Top

Re: Window channel grease
I attempted to "fix" the spring binding by forcing grease into the spring coils. I finally bit the bullet and replaced the spring. This corrected the problem. The window now goes up/down like new. You've already greased the tracks. I'm assuming the "felt" channels are not damaged. You'll probably need to remove the glass to get the arms and mechanism out of the door. If you can't get the bolts holding the regulator in place out of the door that indicates to me a "rust" problem I mentioned earlier.- Top

Re: Window channel grease
Sounds like it is time to remove the regulator from the door and rebuild it.....- Top

Re: Window channel grease
After yrs of storing the window in the down position, nothing worked on my 73. The motor tried in vane to move the mechanism. I need to take everything apart. But before you loosen anything, use a spray can and paint the heads and adjacent area of every fastener to mark their locations. There is a lot of adjustments. Also study the mechanism if your not familiar with it. It's basically a scissors linkage.Steve L

Re: Window channel grease
I typically find that the hard grease in the actual regulator transmission is most of the issue... it is very difficult to remove unless you get it hot, I use a hot water pressure washer and the chunks which come out are hard and nasty...
You can get a tip for your grease gun which has a rubber nipple, use it to refill the gear box, there is a small hole on the side, I use MOBILE BLACK PEARL high tac open face gear lube in the gear box and white lithium on the tracks and rollers. .James A Groome

I am talking about the section of the glass regulator where the shaft goes in and the pinion gear motion is transferred to the larger gear.James A Groome

Re: Window channel grease
Use caution if you are considering spraying solvents (WD-40, etc) inside a fiberglass door.
I did this once without giving it much thought, and I believe that the excess overspray
wicked into the fiberglass and bled through the outer surface of the door.
I didn't realize this until I stripped the car for a repaint years later, and there were big "blotchy"
spots on the exterior door surface which looked to be caused by solvents bleeding through the
fiberglass. I couldn't get it out with lacquer thinner, so I replaced the door as a precaution.
Now I mostly use lubricants that I can apply by hand (e.g., wheel bearing grease.)

Re: Window channel grease
Yes no solvents! Used regular hair dryer and windows rolls like it was power activated but after cool down window resistance increased. Will try torch today for caking in coil is evident . Can Coil (spring) be changed with out door glass removal?- Top
