I know this is an older thread, I have looked at 4 of these bolts recently ( 3952222 ). All the bolts have a distortion in the threat mid way down the bolt similar to a self taping screw, Maybe this portion of the thread is to help facilitate a better ground and the reason for the special bolt designation?

That could very well be the case. I had not noted that on the specimen I had available. I'll have to check that when I get home from this trip.

This is one of the bolts i had access to today. I will take a pick of another bolt tomorrow

1970 AIM shows a "L. Washer" is used. I assume this is an abbreviation for lock washer but the diagram depicts an external star washer. Stars are typically used to help ensure good electrical contact, not as a lock washer. Would a bolt with distorted threads be used in addition to a star washer? The former to keep it tight, the latter for electrical contact?

Order shown is: Alternator-->L. Washer-->Ground Wire-->Bracket-->Bolt. If there's a washer in Terry's photos, it's hidden behind the bracket.

My 1971 AIM (UPC: 12, Sheet: A7, Item #2) shows an external tooth lock washer, part number 138479. It's a #10 external tooth lock washer.
My 1972 AIM (UPC: 12, Sheet: A8, Item #6) shows an external tooth lock washer, part number 138485. It's a 5/16" external tooth lock washer.

I've owned my '71 LT1 since "day one." It has the external lock washer on it as drawn in the '71 AIM.

My original owner 1969 has always had the external tooth star washer, too
