Lock Washers on '67 Water Pump Bolts

I am assuming that because there is no mention of lock washers on the bolts securing the water pumps on '67 small blocks, in version 6.0 of the judging manual, that there are none? Can anyone confirm this?......Brad

    Brad------

No lockwashers on waterpump bolts or studs for 1967 or any other year, big block or small block. If there is a double ended stud, there may be a lockwasher used on the OUTER portion of the stud in the fastening system of whatever is attached to the stud (e.g. alternator brace, etc.). But, between the bolt or stud and the waterpump casting, no lockwasher.

Thanks, Joe....Just curious......What was the original engineering rationale for having bolts only with no lock washers? Brad

My guess would be a coolant leak out the slot of the lock washer...peter...

I don't know what the rationale was. It could be that the engineer responsible felt that these bolts were not susceptible to loosening in service. Or, it could be that the engineer never bought into the notion that split lockwashers had any real effectiveness.

As far as I know, lockwashers were never used under the head of the waterpump retaining bolts on any small block or big block.

+1 Lots of information available showing their ineffectiveness.
