I believe the positive black battery cable comes off the bolt on the back of the starter solenoid and then goes rearward to hook on the J-clip that is attached to the firewall below the heater blower cover. How do you prevent it from touching the exhaust manifold? I assume it should not touch it because it could melt the cable....am I correct in thinking this? I know there is a clip around the solenoid for retaining the other wires....is this clip suppose to hold the positive black battery cable as well?

Yes AIM UPC L36 A16 shows the battery cable routed in with the solenoid wiring in the clip. This gets the battery cable away from the manifold before it is attached to the firewall clip, which is there for big block only. I also bend the battery cable terminal a bit to keep it away from the manifold.
For safety I also recommend a insulation wrap around the starter to help keep both the starter assembly and the wiring better insulated from heat. Removable for judging day.
