    1967 Spare Wheel/ Tire question

I attended the 2018 FL Chapter event - great group of judges and cars. A quick question - my spare tire did not meet the criteria. I knew ahead of time.

Please let me know what is the correct wheel for the spare tire - I was told the spare wheel should be painted red??

I found an original wheel on e-bay rallye wheel - markings on the wheel (center GM) markings MC next to the air valve. Looks like Argent white paint - 15 X 6 Thanks

Robert - Interesting. Please check the 6th Ed of the 1967 Corvette TIM&JG. The original '67 "Rallye" Wheels were manufactured by Kelsey-Hayes & the outer faces were painted dull Argent Silver & the back side was painted black. The early 1967 wheels were stamped in the valve stem area with a letter "B" stamping (our early '67 #1476 has "B" wheels) & later wheels were stamped "DC'' & occasional "DG" according the the JG. Who's says working on old car isn't FUN.

I have no idea where anyone came up with the idea that spare wheels were painted red for 1967. Regardless of whether the car was equipped with standard rally wheels or optional cast wheels, the spare wheel was exactly the same as the 4 road wheels. So, if one got a flat and replaced a wheel/tire with the spare, no one would know the difference looking at the car. Of course, that's not the way it is with modern cars, if they have a spare tire/wheel, at all.

There should be some silver oversoray on the back side of the wheel.

Red? um no. Wheels were dipped in black and hung dry - thus you may see drip runs at one point on the rim. Large DC stamped near valve stem opening (unless it's an early car as Joe point out with the B wheels). They were shot with argent silver paint with some silver paint traveling through the slots on the front of the rims where we expect to see some silver overspray on the backside of the rims. 15x6 is correct. The rims are dated on the inside, so once a tire is mounted we can't tell the dates. Ara

Maybe the score sheet says "should be runs" and not "should be red"

Now that was clever to come up with that one. As opposed to “should be something else”.

That makes so much sense and seems so obvious after I read it and so un-obvious before I read it.
