I recently got my alternator back from a reputable restorer and went to put it in last night. I noticed that there was quite a bit of end play, enough to make a clunk sound. the incorrect one I removed had no end play. Is this normal? Thanks!

Something is amiss. The front bearing should be held and the back of course floats.
I would pull it apart to find out why it was moving, if it was me.
The front Conrad Ball Bearing should not have the internal clearance to move .060.
Easy enough to pull the front half off and investigate.
Almost like the bearing isn't wide enough or the retainer plate is loose.
