    WSW access door mount seals

    Guys,

I'm looking for a replacement for the seals that are seen in the 69 AIM (UPC 1ASM D3) that go underneath the oval mounting plates for the wsw access door mounting brackets. The AIM lists them as part number 3966668 but none of the vendors seem to carry them. If they're not available what's the best substitute?

Visit a new home construction site and grab some roofing paper. It will work well. Remember too to add some sealant to the grommets that pass through the firewall. Roofing cement works well for that purpose. It will also work for the sealant in the windshield wiper compartment. Alternately you can visit the local big box home improvement store, but a roll of tar paper will likely be enough to do the seals on all the C3 Corvettes ever built with the windshield wiper door mechanism.

Thanks Rich I just ordered them from Doc Rebuild. Thanks Terry. I have the roofing sealant already, I used it to seal the cowl as some suggested. I'l be sure to use it on the grommets too.

Doc Rebuild's are oval, but I think the originals were a rectangle. At least, I've seen enough of them with "corners" to think that was the original shape.

I think roofing paper is much thinner than the original material.

There are several weights of roofing paper. I think it is 15 lb and 30 lb. (It has been a long time since I had anything to do with roofing paper) One needs to use the heavier. If there is some heaver than 30 lb, go for it.

BTW: I have never seen original sealant in this application that looks like foam, but I haven't seen them all.

Thanks guys. As I said I ordered them form Doc Rebuild, although I agree the AIM shows them as rectangles. I will wait to see what they look like but I will also try and get some of the heaviest roofing paper I can find and see if it is thick enough.

Mike, how many are needed total 3 or 6.

                  Thanks Bob

I agree with originally square. One restorer I know uses the material that GM used for AC component sealer to fiewall. Once in a blue moon a roll of it will show up at a swap meet.
