    1963 frame shims

How was the number of shims required at each body mount established
at the factory. Did they measure the frame at each mount?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

I recall John Hinckley discussed this years ago. The line workers had a gage that spanned the body mounts. They laid the gage and measured the gaps, then put the hash marks on the frame next to the mounts to indicate the number of shims. Later on before body drop the appropriate number of shims were placed on the mounts, secured with masking tap, then the body was dropped and the bolts driven. The same process applied to later model years with the rubber cushion mounts, but, of course, the gage was redesigned for that mounting scheme.

Too bad we've never seen a photo of the gage... at least I'm not aware of one.
