    1967 Radio Speaker Re-Cone Recommendations

I'm reaching out to the membership for advise. I am finally getting around to replacing the heater core in my 1967 A/C Coupe. At the same time I will be replacing all the dash cluster light bulbs (USA made), servicing the radio and repairing the non-working clock.

As you can imagine, this is a major undertaking. I only want to do this job once and I started thinking about the 50+ year old radio speaker which is now accessible. I searched the archives to see what has been discussed in the past. It appears there are two choices - replacement or re-cone. Since my car is an all original, unrestored car with a recent Chapter Top Flight award (and possible Bow Tie candidate) I am tending to going with a re-cone of the original.

Jackson Speaker Service was mentioned in the archives as a reputable company but their phone number is disconnected. Are they still in business? I found another company called Utah Recone. Has anyone dealt with them? I called them and the gentleman seemed very knowledgeable and claims to have been in business for over 20 years and has done many Corvette speakers. Cost is a reasonable at $65.00 + shipping. He offers a one year warranty too. Can anyone recommend another service?

    Thank You,
    Rocco

I don't know of anyone that is still doing that type of work. I can recommend the following company and their replacement speaker...the best I have seen and used. Scroll down about 2/3 of the way on this page and see what you think.

      Sirs
I used electro-tech and am still very happy with the sound quality (9 years now) not identical but not visible and will make your original radio much easier to live with.

Re: 1967 Radio Speaker Re-Cone Recommendations

Thank you for your prompt replies.

On my initial research, I found "turnswitch". I called them and checked out their website. They have a nice photo of the 6" X 9" Corvette speaker they offer. It looks quite different than the original, especially the magnet, which is round. They claim it is a high quality functional replacement which I don't doubt.

However, reading past posts in the archives on this subject, this speaker won't pass flight judging. Apparently a judge can use a small mirror to look at the bottom of the speaker and you will lose all points for originality. Hence my decision to pursue a re-cone.

Can anyone confirm that Jackson Speaker Service is out of business?

        Thank You,
        Rocco

Re: 1967 Radio Speaker Re-Cone Recommendations

Jackson Speaker has been reconing speakers for over 30 years and still is going strong. They just did a C2 speaker for me. Great people. I believe they just changed their phone number. They have a current ad in Hemings so the new number should be there. I highly recommend them.

Agree with Dave, he did one for me not long ago.

I did my own for the 58 - not too hard to do. Bought the kit from the Speaker Exchange in Tampa Fl. They also do reconing.......

I wrote an article for our chapter newsletter on how to do it. Link here:

                Rocco,
I am also doing the heater core on my 67 A/C coupe. Take a look at the foam seals on the blend doors, mine were falling apart and turning to dust.
                Kind regards

These folks installed a new speaker in my 66. They do excellent work, very fast and very reasonable.

Thank you for everyone's responses. I have tried calling Jackson Speaker Service several times over the last few days and it seems that the number is disconnected or out of service. The number has been confirmed by several sources on a google search as 517-789-6400.

Can anyone provide a different phone number or email address for Ron McGee? I do not have a current issue of Hemmings.

I have also decided to replace all the foam seals on the heater/AC bod and associated ductwork.

                          Thank You, Rocco
