I just received a 4 speed Muncie Transmission today out of a car that hasn't run since 1977. No big deal, BUT when I started to check the numbers on the transmission there is NO Vin on the side, just a production code number P0128. Here is were it gets strange, the number on the main case is stamped larger than normal and partially ground off. I could see the number is 3864848. I went through some old paperwork and found a handout sheet from a old Bloomington Gold Workshop Instructor, this transmission was used on very rare 1964 Corvettes. Does anyone have any more information on this transmission, the 63-64 judging manual says nothing about it.

The fact that the main case has no VIN derivative stamping indicates that this transmission starter life as a SERVICE transmission assembly. I have no information on the 3864848 casting number. The fact that part of it was ground off and re-stamped implies that the finished case was factory-modified from the case identified by the original casting number. 3864848 also implies a number which would not even have been released during the 1964 model year. I'd say it's, at the earliest, a mid-to-late 1965 released number. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1964 Muncie Tranmission ID
For 1964 you should see this in casting numbers:
Main Case 1964-1965 3851325
Side Cover 1963-1965 3831707
Tail Housing 1963-1966 9779246 with speedometer on the passenger side
Tail Housing 1964 3846429 with speedometer on the drivers side
Hope this helps in identifying what you might have.

Re: 1964 Muncie Tranmission ID
If you look in the back of Alan Colvins book "Chevrolet by the Numbers 1960-64. He addresses two odd ball Muncie casting numbers. Your 3864848 is one of them. 606 is the other.
He asks to be contacted by those that have either of these. Particularly if the trans has never been apart.
At the time of his writing little if anything was known but appeared to be of 1965 model year manufacture.- Top

Re: 1964 Muncie Tranmission ID
It appears nothing special about Main Case 3864846. It was very similar to Main Case 3851325 and according to Engineering Drawing the entire 4 speed assembly 3864846 including many parts from it were re engineered and they were removed from use 1-15-65.
Also found drawing for Main Case 3839606, again there is nothing special about it. The print notes: " Identical with 3831704 except as shown" The revision record shows (#1) on 1-24-63 it was "Revised to agree with 3831704 Dated 1-24-63. (#2) on 3-15-63 "a 1/4" Dia. locating point added" (#3) on 4-24-63 "Revised to agree with 3831704 dated 4-24-63"- Top

Mike,
According to the Muncie 4 Speed information on Auto Gear's website, the transmission you refer to was indeed produced with the last three numbers (intentionally) ground off:
In addition Auto Gear indicates: "3839606 1964 Regular Bearing Pat. Pending, 7/8" Bore 3864_____ 1964 Milled off last 3 digits 7/8" Bore Patent Pending 3851325 1964 - 1965 7/8" Bore Patent Pending Mostly 1964 3851325 1964 - 1965 7/8" Bore Patent Number Date codes from 1963 to 1966 included only the month & day; such asP0110 indicates January (01) 10th day (10)." which would mean that the date code on your transmission translates to January (01) 28th (28) likely 1963 or 1964
Hope this helps.
