    Hi All,

Is this dipstick correct for a '69 L71?

    Thanks,

Unless it is a late production car, I'd say this is a correct dipstick. It's missing the white plastic plug on the end of the loop handle, though.

      The 1969 Corvette AIM lists GM # 3959158 as the dipstick for models with option L36 & L71. MY 1969 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (May 1969) lists GM # 3959158 for 1969 Corvettes w/427 engine, dimension are as follows: A = 17 13/32" and B = 19".

      The 67-68 Corvette 427 dipstick is listed as GM # 3925520 (A = 17 13/32" and B = 18 1/2").

As per Chevrolet Parts History GM # 3959158 was replaced in November 1970 (service parts over the counter) with GM # 3981088 (A = 23 13/64" and B = 24").

Based on my research the dipsticks for 1965-1967 Corvettes w/327 were stamped "ENGINE OIL" and "M". I would ASSUME the 396 & 427 dipsticks had the same stampings. Also the 1969-1971 Chevrolet-Camaro-Chevelle-Nova models with 327 & 350 engine dipsticks were stamped "USE GM 6041-M-QUALITY MS OIL" and "M" or "E" depending on the manufactured of the dipstick. I would ASSUME that 1969-1971 Corvette dipsticks would be stamped "USE GM 6041-M-QUALITY MS OIL" and the "M" but that is just an educated guess.

        Dave------

The GM #3959158 dipstick had a longer tubular section between the seat and the loop handle. The loop handle had a flattened end and, thus, no plastic insert.

The GM #3925520 was used for 1968 and at least midway through 1969.

The later GM #3981088 can only be used to SERVICE 1965-69 big blocks if the dipstick tube is also replaced with a GM #3981089.

          Joe,

I have owned many dipsticks in the last 38 years. The dipsticks with the plastic insert at the end of the loop have a "M" stamping while the dipsticks with the flattened end at the end of the loop have an "E" stamping.......2 different manufacturers. In general, the Corvette dipsticks seem to just have the "M" stamping.
