Can anyone help with the what the correct alternator brackets are? A picture would be very helpful. The AIM pictures I have are poor quality and its not at all clear... I'm most interested in the correct lower mounting bracket(s).

Re: Correct 1966 L79 C60 N40 Alternator mounting?
The lower alternator mounting bracket for your application is the same as that for applications without C-60 or N-40. It's a stamped steel bracket of GM #3846565. The long "arm" of the bracket attaches on the upper left side waterpump stud. The other end attaches to the integral "bracket" on the front of the left side exhaust manifold.
There are plenty of GM #3846565 brackets for sale on eBay if you need one or need to view one to confirm that you have the correct bracket.Last edited by Joe L.; November 23, 2018, 11:01 PM.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Correct 1966 L79 C60 N40 Alternator mounting?
I'm aware on the front water pump mounted pivot support and adjuster brackets (I'm missing the pivot support), but I'm unclear about the lower alternator mounting bracket (the one I have is the standard early type bolted to the LH exhaust manifold). I've attached two pics of what I have now, its not clear to me if my manifold is correct though. Not much on the rest of the car is/was!- Top

Your exhaust manifold is not correct. The manifold you have is a pre-1966 manifold. What you need is a GM #3846559 manifold. That will work with the GM #3846565 support (bracket).
By the way, your master cylinder is not correct, either. This is a 1967+ master cylinder. If the car has power brakes, it was used as a replacement for the 1966 power brake master cylinder which is extremely expensive in all forms. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Thanks Joe,
Your help is very much appreciated, now it all makes a bit more sense. I've already purchased the correct master and have it hidden away in the garage along with new brake lines (and yes, it was expensive!). Looks like I'll be spending some more $$ for the correct manifolds too...- Top

Well, the manifold won't be as expensive as the master cylinder. There are several ways to go. The cheapest is probably an aftermarket replacement manifold available through Dorman and others. This is a Chinese-manufactured manifold. It's not an exact copy of the original but it should be 100% functional. It's actually not a copy of the 3846559. It's a copy of the GM #3872765, The 3872765 is the same as the 3846559 except that it has fittings for AIR. These are plugged for non AIR applications.
Another option is the Paragon reproduction available through Paragon (and dealers like Dr. Rebuild, etc.). This is a high quality USA manufactured , GM Restoration Parts licensed piece. However, as above, it's a reproduction of the GM #3872765 with AIR fittings. I don't think the 3846559 is currently reproduced.
Of course, there's always the used route. For several reasons, I don't like using used exhaust manifolds, especially "well used" pieces. I feel that they are much more crack-prone. They often have "virtually impossible to remove", damaged studs. In addition, they often suffer from "unsightly" deep pitting. But, depending on condition, you can usually pick these up for a pretty good price. There are a lot around since this manifold was not exclusive to Corvettes. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Robert:
As always, Joe L has the right information to help.
But personally I would just contact David S. in California and get a good used manifold. He advertises heavily in the NCRS Driveline and has just about anything you want for our cars.
Another option is to put a WTB ad in the Driveline, or over on the Corvette Forum C2 WTB Section and get one from another hobbyist. They (correct manifolds) are out there if you look. Ebay is another source.............just be cautious.
