1962 convertible top tack strip

The convertible top windshield header tack strip in my 1962 seems very durable and appears to be saturated with a black substance that reminds me of what is used in heavy felt roofing paper. I have to replace the tack strip in the #4 bow and wonder if anyone has an idea what the manufacturer used when the frame was built?

Ken, It may be just black paint over the layers of fiber.
