    66 Frame stencil resurrection

Finally have the frame stripped of suspension parts etc and before I send off to the chemical stripper or blaster I thought I would try to reveal the frame stencil if I could. I have only used a mild cleaner and nylon brush so far and it seems obvious to me that unless the surface rust magically "disappears" the likelihood of uncovering the stencil is unlikely.
However I thought I might as well ask you all if anyone has tricks or methods to try before I try something stronger or give up the chase.
The attached pic shows the section (passenger side just forward of the kickup correct?). I dont know if its my imagination but I think I can see the faint outline of some white lettering. Might be wishful thinking.
    Any advice appreciated, thanks.
    Dan

    Re: 66 Frame stencil resurrection

    Hi Dan,

This is a topic that I recently did research on. Luckily through NCRS Forum posts I'm pretty sure what my stencil should look like. My '66's original was illegible and I selected the wrong one and painted it on the frame. My body is still off the frame so it'll be easy enough to fix the error.

Do a search of this post by Dan Termeer on frame stencil paint. Sorry, I don't know how to link to archive posts yet so I'll attach a shot of the thread by Dan. It was very helpful to me. Everyone had something good to add to the discussion, but check out posts by Gary Beaupre. He's compiled detailed frame stencil files. Maybe you can post your '66's build date then we can figure out the closest frame stencil that you should have. Once you know what it should look like you could then possibly read remnants of your original stencil? Betcha you could construct a stencil within a day or so from your original. Here's the thread shot. Good luck, Mike

Tks Mike. I'll check out these posts for some help. Although my frame is in excellent shape the surface rust and 50 years later the original stenciling is pooched. I like your idea. The final assembly date of my car appears to be April 21, 66.
      Tks

        Great Dan,

Thanks to Gary I'm pretty sure of the stencil I'll have Quanta reproduce for my '66. I think I've nailed it down.

On a separate note......I'll bet your shop smells great! That looks like real cedar board paneling. Hmmmmmm....what a great idea. Mike.

Ha. Its actually pine but it smells great.
Heres a bigger shot. Should have built a bedroom in here.

              Thanks Don,

I'll practice this in one of my threads. Gotta make a copy of these instructions. Thanks!

                Dan,

Pine sounds great too! But the wife and I have always enjoyed the aroma of cedar. We're planning on an addition to the shop with a high rafter ceiling for a lift. An end wall in paneling would be great! Thanks for the great idea. It'll keep insects down too.

Here's a shot of where the sisters live now. The yellow '65 and blue '66. Mike

                  Re: 66 Frame stencil resurrection

                  Sorry Dan,

Drifted away from your subject. From researching different threads and reading what Gary has posted, there's another subject of crayon dates. Make sure you investigate this. When I bought my '66 frame stencil from Quanta way back when they only had one variety. They also sold crayon kits.

Well, come find out my stencil was wrong and I shouldn't have drawn a crayon date on my frame as the date is included in the correct stencil. My build date is December 1st, '65 so I've selected November 29th as the date in my proposed stencil. Now Quanta makes customized stencils to order. I'm still doing final comparisons to VINs close to mine when I find them.

                  Mike

Good to know. Im a long way from putting this one back together so I'll make sure I do the research.

Great idea. Shouldn't have thrown it out back in the 70's!

I know I've got one somewhere wrapped up in an old Jimi Hendrix poster. I've seen them for sale in Spencer's Gifts a while back. Don't know if they're still in business?

Dan, I replied to your PM.

I would have never thought the stencil would be visible after a chemical dip. That's impressive.
I was considering media blasting the frame but perhaps I'll do the same as you. I assume you had no issue with chemical leaking out long after?
