    1955 Flywheel Housing casting number?

The 1955 parts manual has part number 3713845 as the correct flywheel housing for a '55 V8 Powerglide Corvette. The casting number on the part is usually different, but not mentioned in the 1955 parts guides. The 56 and later guides changed the part number (for 1955 models) to 3726272, and show the casting number as 3836142.

Does anybody know the correct casting number for part number 3713845? Thanks!

    Michael,
My guess is casting # 3733293. On the web I found photos of a housing with casting # 3836142 as well as photos of a housing with casting # 3733293 and in my opinion they looked identical.

BTW, GM # 3713845 was replaced with GM # 3726272 in Jan. 1956 as per Chevrolet parts History (for service parts).

Dave, I also saw the #3733293 housings. One had a date code in 1957. I'm puzzled why they would replace the part in Jan 1956, and not keep the same casting if it existed in 1955 through 1957... Folks on other forums are saying the 3733293 casting was made for the 283 engine, but I can't find proof.

      Thanks,
      Mike

My research shows casting numbers 3733293 and 3836142 were both used in 1955. Not sure why or what the differences are between the two.

Thanks, Troy, I think you may be right. I have a chance to check a '55 near me next week that is unmolested, and I'll post my result...

a 56 housing has one bolt surface fly cut deeper so the bolt doesn't hit the oil filter can.
