    Lead wheel weights banned

Just learned that 9 states have outlawed the used of lead wheel weights. More to follow?

EPA estimates that 1 million pounds of lead from wheel weights that fall off hitting pot holes and in collisions are scattered into the highway environment each year, ending up in woods, streams, rivers.

EPA wants to stop pollution? Fix the darn roads more than just lead falls off of cars. People get killed because our highways are a disgrace! But wait lets blame the lead weights. Boy Andrew Cuomo will be running with this ban

I see eight, unless another state joined in since May 2017 when Maryland did so.
Washington was the first in 2011. The latest is Maryland, which passed a lead wheel weight law in May 2017.
The other states with bans are California, Illinois, Maine, Vermont, Minnesota and New York.

So if you get stopped while passing through one of these states, they take your wheel weights.

That and Andrew Cuomo will be running with this ban is just another political farce.

Why can’t these bastards just leave old stuff alone. They screw up enough of the modern things by protecting us from our selves.

It's been like this in California for several years. In fact, suppliers are not allowed to even ship lead weights into California. The new weights are either iron or zinc.

I don't know what the auto manufacturers use for new cars. It seems unlikely to me that they would use lead weights on cars shipped to states where they're allowed and non-lead weights for states prohibiting lead. So, I suspect that all new cars probably get non-lead weights.

I guess that the politicians in Massachsetts have not heard about lead wheight ban in other states. This state is usually one of the first to enact one of these Hairbrianed schemes.

Try and buy lead shot for fuel injections without a coating on them. Luckily JD is a hoarder.

Are they really saying 1 million pounds of lead per year?

Let's do the fourth grade math.
260 million registered vehicles in the US.
==> 1 pound of weights fell off per 260 vehicles per year

Assume 5 oz of weights installed / vehicle
==> 81 pounds of weights installed per 260 vehicles

==> 1 pound of every 81 pounds of weights, about 4%, fall off per year

                        Sound high. Possible, but high.

Lead weights have been banned in Maine for some time because of Loon mortality. I think most sportsmen here strongly support such a move.
