    1965 Muncie Overhaul Kit availability

    Hi,
I need to give my 1965 Muncie an overhaul.
Where can I purchase a Muncie overhaul kit?
    With no Chinese parts, hopefully.
    Thanks,
    Gary

Larry Fischer of D and L transmissions 631-351-4837. He is out of New York. Focuses on US made products

Paul Cangialosi literally wrote the book on Muncie transmissions. He also has several you-tube videos on building them. I just rebuilt mine using his parts and couldn't be happier with the parts or his service. http://www.5speeds.com/

Thanks, I'll try them and hopefully they will ship to Australia.

            Something I noticed;
Originally the Muncie came with a maximum construction ball bearing on the input shaft, sometimes called a slot-fill bearing. This style bearing has a higher radial load rating than the Conrad style bearing. The difference is a loading slot in the outer race. This allows for a greater number of balls to be installed than is otherwise possible. Almost every kit I have purchased has the Conrad style bearing in it, no loading slot and has less rolling elements. This cuts costs as the maximum construction bearing is almost twice the cost as the Conrad style bearing. Both are the same physical sizes as the slot is the only difference. Typically a 6203 would be the number for the Conrad bearing and 203 would be the nomenclature for the slot-filled/max construction bearings. Although this nomenclature can change depending on the manufacture. Good quality kits will include the slot-fill/maximum construction bearing for the input shaft. This is one method I use to determine the kit quality.

With all that said there is another school of thought.
Use a sealed Conrad bearing. (no seals are possible on the maximum construction style because of the loading slot)
The thought is sealed bearings last longer due to less contaminants affecting the bearing life and they may reduce windage.

Like everything many views to examine the same thing. Use what works best for you.
            Rick

I've been rebuilding/repairing 4spds (mostly Muncies) for 50yrs, and I've been doing business with Larry Fischer ( http://www.dandltransmission.com/ ) for over 35yrs. For sure, there are other vendors for 4sp parts and rebuilding, but my association with Larry has been so good, that I have ZERO interest in looking at another vendor.

Very good point Rick. I asked about the original type bearing in the past and was told it is obsolete. I don't recall on the last Muncie if I checked with my bearing house? I would be interested to know who sells that bearing in their kits. I never used a sealed bearing in that application but see Paul does so I would think it would be fine.

Larry Fischer is able to get which ever bearing you want.

I rebuilt my 70 M-20 using Paul's book and parts. It turned out great. Paul also is readily available for technical questions if you purchase the parts from him. I'd recommend.
