    Rally Rims

Has anyone had any luck finding a powder coat color close to the Argent Silver of a rally rim?

Original rims were not powder coated. They were painted.

Argent silver paint is available that matches the original quite well. It s/b low gloss almost flat.

I know that Gene, but am still looking for a powder coat close to Argent silver. My car is not a trailer queen, it's get driven 6 to 7 thousand miles a year and is a 1962. The coating on aftermarket rally wheels is cheap at best, looking for a permanent fix. Powder coated the wheels on my Tahoe 5 years ago and they still look brand new!

Terry, I talked to a coater a couple years ago about rally wheels and he told me if I brought a color sample in it could probably be matched. Might be worth a try in your area. Good Luck! Steve

Use a black standard power coat then scuff them up then spray the argent silver over. Then you would have the correct looking black backside plus the color you desire. I’m sure the protection would be good. I’m assuming you are concerned with them rusting.

Agreed. I've seen this done before with great results.

              Terry,
I had 12 rims powder coated. They called it rally wheel silver. all were great, then I sent 4 more about a year later and the bubbled where the centers were welded. I know they do a wash on all blasted metal and told them that that was most likely trapped moisture that came out during the baking of the powder. They said to use JB weld where the bubbles came out. Then I knew he was crazy. I told him that they did 12 without bubbles and something is now different. NOPE. So now I am going to paint over the powder coating. Was good while it lasted. They do not want to remove powder coating to re- do things.

This is why I never use powder coating, when it gets scuffed, blisters etc. the removal is an issue.

What would you do instead of powder coating? I've had many things powder coated over the years (all by the same company) and never had a problem!

                      Terry

I use a high quality epoxy primer over bare metal to seal it from moisture and top coat it with a paint consistent with original factory top coat.

The reason I prefer this method over powder coating is powder coating can only be removed by high heat, so when it gets scuffed, chipped or water ingress in cracked areas where it flexes i.e. blisters, I would have to have powder coating removed professionally. Plus I can see powder coating a mile away which is not good for simulating original finishes.

Having said that I wouldn't be critical of anyone using powder coating.

                      It's just my personal choice.

the ultimate much better choice we use today on chassis part is e-coat, its just like plating in that the coating is pulled to and bonded to the surface at a microscopic level, best thing going. F150 frames and all. power has been horrible situation for the reason people have experienced, don't get why judges close the eye to air cleaner bases that are three times as thick as the original with that junk on them, but that's a different thread.
