There are three tabs that hold the lighter in if your lighter won't stay in and you can't adjust the tabs then most likely one of the tabs is either broken or cracked. It's a pretty basic setup. Make sure you disconnect the battery when working on the lighter.

As Bob said the problem is probably the tabs. They do rust over time. The originals have three tabs and the later service replacements have two tabs. Just an FYI, as I recall the corvette lighter is shorter than the passenger car lighter so if you replace it make sure you get the correct one to fit in the cluster.

If you're referring to the lighter in your 1985, the original could have been one of two.

If it's a Casco manufactured unit, you need GM #14004942. If it's a Rochester-manufactured piece, you need GM #17057195. Both of these are long-since GM discontinued but you should still be able to find some NOS examples around.

Keep in mind that the housings (i.e. the "receptacle") are different for Casco and Rochester lighters. I would not "mix-and-match" them. That could be the basis for a problem----perhaps one like the problem you have.

I took Joe's hint yesterday that the problem might be a mis-match between the lighter and the socket to heart, so I tried all my lighters with the current socket this evening. The first two lighters didn't stick—the third lighter quickly blew the CTSY/CLCK 15-amp fuse. Sigh …

… I think I'm going to put off trying to fix this until I can get a complete lighter/socket combination.
